The Sussex Cottage - West Sussex

A 400-year-old cottage nestled in the South Downs, lovingly restored with a focus on preserving its character while creating a home that feels comfortable, timeless and deeply connected to its surroundings.

Rather than beginning with cosmetic changes, the investment was made where it mattered most: a new roof, an efficient kerosene heating system and carefully considered improvements that would protect the building for years to come. Existing floorboards were sanded and restored, new carpets introduced where appropriate, and simple curtains and blinds soften each room while framing views of the Sussex countryside.

Working within a considered budget encouraged a thoughtful approach. Antiques and vintage pieces were sourced over time, layered with comfortable furniture, natural textures and understated decoration to create interiors that feel authentic rather than over-designed.

Outside, the garden continues to evolve. Plants that struggled in the chalky Sussex soil have gradually been replaced with native and climate-appropriate planting, creating a landscape that feels as though it belongs to the setting and becomes more beautiful with each passing season.

The Sussex Cottage is an ongoing labour of love and a reflection of my design philosophy: creating homes that are lived in, collected over time and designed to endure.
